We got off the highway at some point and went into more rural areas. The northwest of India is more arid and the landscapes reflect that. We passed through only one large town and that main thoroughfare had just as much congestion as any big city.

At dusk we reached Samode Palace. Dear Tara surprised my parents with a room here. Yes, she is amazing. After a quick tour we headed out to the bus to go to our hotel. Some locals playing cricket explained that the monkeys were screeching at the leopard high on the mountain. And with my parents super telephoto zoom we could actually make out that the black dot up there was indeed a big cat.
We headed for our accommodations, Samode Bagh, the cool garden counterpart to the palace. Tara got us a drum greeting with marigold petal showers for our special treat. After a drink we headed back up to the palace for a puppet show and dinner.
